Orange County reported its highest one-day total of new coronavirus cases for the second day in a row Sunday.
The seven-day average of new cases also rose, hitting its highest level since the coronavirus pandemic and COVID-19 arrived locally in March.
“When you have 20,000-plus infections per day, how can you talk about a second wave?" said Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institutes of Health.
An Italian infectious disease specialist said coronavirus was losing its strength and may die out before a vaccine is developed, but fellow epidemiologists disagree.
The new cases account for 4.6% of the 6,051 tests that came back positive Sunday.
